5 Books I Meant to Read in 2020

So these are books I bought, and had every intention of reading, but for some reason just never got round to. I’m not putting these in any particular order, and I’ll try to keep the descriptions as succinct as possible!

So, here they are!

1. Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons

I was so prepared to read this that I even bought the second book in advance and yet I just can never seem to start it. It’s a pretty chunky book so I’m guessing some of my reluctance is that I’m intimidated, it is looooong. This one is an adult fantasy that plays with the Chosen One trope.

2. The Extraordinaires by T.J. Klune

Honestly I want to read just any T.J. Klune because I’ve heard so many great things but this is the only one I’ve actually bought so far. It just sounds so fun and I love how bright and retro the cover is. This is story about a fanboy who writes fanfic about his favourite superhero. It has an LGBT love story and I know I’ll love it as soon as I can get into it.

3. The Betrayals by Bridget Collins

This was definitely a case of a cover buy but oh my gosh, what a gorgeous cover this book has. I’ve only heard good things about this one so far so I’m excited to finally get to it! (Probably sometime next year…) This one is about an exclusive academy and a man who returns there in disgrace. There is some kind of Game that takes place every year along with secrets and lies that come to light. It all sounds very intriguing!

4. A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane

This one I’m still not sure when I’ll finally get round to reading it. It’s an adult fantasy romance and I’m a bit wary on how the author will balance the two. It does have favourable reviews though so it’s probably one I’ll read for a challenge or if I have nothing else more pressing. A Heart of Blood and Ashes features a barbarian who is out for revenge on the King who killed his family–only he gets his daughter instead.

5. The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

What’s making me reluctant to pick this one up is Ththe polarising reviews. People either love it or hate it. But then the people who rate it low do so because they’re saying it’s a copy cat for SoC. Now I’ve never read any Grisha novel but the only similarity I can see is that it’s a fantasy heist novel? So I’ll be interested to see how that holds up. It’s all about hunting down artefacts as the main character tries to regain his name. It’s set in Paris which I love and the cover is another gorgeous one. The sequel is out already but I actually managed to hold off this time!
